New York City is about one of the most diverse places you can get, mixed with multiple different cultures and religions. Everyone can experience a different culture in NYC if they tried. But besides the diversity, this city has tolerance. This is highlighted by the social activism in the city's past. These showed people supporting each other, for what they and others believed in, and I think that's one way to show how the city really is quite incredible. And this trip to the Museum of the City of New York showed me that.
One famous moment and quite controversial moment was when many people wanted to put an Islamic center 625 feet away from Ground Zero. This was the Park 51 movement. Many thought it would be a good idea to put a place to acknowledge the Islamic people, as well as the Muslims. But many this a Trojan Horse tactic for terrorists to cause a second attack on the World Trade Center. But overall while many thought it was a good idea, others thought it would be a message sent to the families of the people who had died in the attacks.
Another famous was the 1971 Gay Rights movement. Many New Yorkers went out of their way to support the people who were being discriminated, because of their sexual orientation. Considering these were earlier times, around the time being gay or lesbian was considered a sin. This movement started letting gay people to be open and be proud of their sexuality.
Overall, this trip was very helpful and great to see some of NYC's background, and to see lots of great social activism examples to use later on. New York is a very tolerant city.
