Crank by Ellen Hopkins

The book "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins is a book told from the perspective of one person, Kristina. Kristina starts out as a quiet, gifted high school junior, and then turns into a rowdy person who interacts with everyone around except her parents, who she hides her drug addiction from. She starts to take drugs and her addiction starts to slowly go downhill and so on, to a point of struggle to get her life back. This book shows how quickly over time, characters can drastically change, becoming completely different from their past self. This is shown by how Kristina struggles to keep her mind and her life intact.

The book starts out with some backstory about Kristina's life before. Like how her mother and father are separated, and how Kristina hasn't seen him in 8 years. And also how her mother is married to a nicer man named Scott. Afterwards, Kristina goes to her dad's house in Albuquerque, New Mexico for three weeks in the summer. When there she seems very distant from her father, always attempting small talk with him but never really going anywhere with it. She then meets Adam, who turns out to be the person to get Kristina into meth, or otherwise known as the monster. After leaving New Mexico, and going back home, she feels almost the same way she did when she was with her dad, very distant and unconnected. After having a relationship with Adam and taking crank with him, she wonders how she'll live without him.

Back home, things are very different for Kristina, or Bree which is her darker, more wild and rowdy side of her, that wants the monster, while the smaller weaker Kristina has fallen, while Bree has taken over. She wonders who she will connect with the way she connected with Adam. But mainly she's wondering where she will get crank for herself, because she's quickly becoming more and more addicted to it. Then she meets Brendan and Chase. Both of them don't know each other, but are different, and have different relationships with Kristina. Brendan associating with her as Bree, while Chase knows her as Kristina. Brendan is a success with Kristina's mother, while things get darker and worse with him and Kristina, or Bree as he knows her. While Chase treats her well and tries to give her a good time, also while trying to keep her out of trouble with her parents. I don't want to say anymore about the story you should just go read it yourselves and read the two sequels(which I'm planning on doing).

Overall, this book was a very strong realistic fiction that was eye opening to me and should be for anyone that reads the book. It shows lots of character changes, and how big they can be. And how certain things in life can really change a person's way of life.
